Between the last time I went scuba diving in 2014 and my most recent dive in 2025 in Southeast Asia, there have been two major global bleaching events. I noticed a significant difference in the underwater scenery and people were talking about coral bleaching in popular dive spots and how the coral reefs there may soon disappear. Living in Europe, far away from the ocean’s corals, led me to take a closer look at what is going on, the causes and prevention.
I wanted to turn the environmental issue of coral bleaching into a clear one page infographic for a general audience. The information on this topic was pulled from multiple sources (as seen in the bottom right corner of the infographic) and the challenge was to combine it all together into one cohesive piece.
I started by gathering all the key information: what coral bleaching is, what causes it, who and what it affects, and what can be done about it.
To show the severity of the problem and that it has escalated in the most recent decade, I wanted to show a timeline of the problem and bar charts using data on the global bleaching events.
I illustrated the coral and icons in the Causes section using Affinity Designer.
Software used: Affinity Designer, RAWGraphs, Photoshop
